Dental anxiety is a real and common barrier to getting the care you need. At Woodland Family Dental, we understand that many patients experience nervousness, fear, or discomfort when visiting the dentist. That’s why we offer sedation dentistry to help make your appointments easier and more relaxing. If you live in Woodland, CA or the surrounding West Sacramento area, our gentle and supportive approach can change the way you feel about dental care.
According to the American Dental Association, as many as 22% of Americans avoid the dentist due to anxiety or fear. Whether you’re worried about pain, sensitive teeth, or past negative experiences, sedation dentistry can help you feel calm, safe, and in control during your visit.
Ashley, Juani, and Dr Sibal have been amazing! My daughter is 17 with bad anxiety and they”ve managed to make her comfortable here at Woodland Family Dental and have been doing a huge amount of dental work in record time. We’re so thankful we found this practice! I can’t say enough about how wonderful they are. My daughter loves it here, and she used to not be able to sit through a dental visit. The staff here is very understanding of her anxiety disorder and has allowed her to cry for a minute if she needs to. Other practices kicked us out when she did that. Thank you so much, Ashley and Juani and Drs Tutunaro, who”s moved, and Dr Sibal. You saved my daughter’s smile! May the Good Lord bless this practice!!!

Oral Conscious Sedation for Relaxed Dental Visits
Oral conscious sedation involves taking a prescribed medication before your appointment to help you enter a deeply relaxed state. You’ll remain awake and able to respond to instructions, but many patients feel drowsy and remember little about the procedure afterward.
Oral sedation is ideal for patients who:
- Experience moderate to severe dental anxiety
- Require longer or more complex procedures
- Have difficulty getting numb with local anesthesia
- Have a strong gag reflex
- Avoid the dentist due to past trauma or discomfort
You’ll need a trusted adult to drive you home after your visit, as the effects of the medication take time to wear off.
Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas) for Mild Dental Anxiety
For patients with mild anxiety or children who need extra reassurance, we offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas. This colorless, odorless gas is inhaled through a small nose mask and takes effect quickly. It helps you feel light, calm, and at ease throughout the appointment.
Once your treatment is complete, we stop the gas and allow you to breathe oxygen for a few minutes–after which you’ll feel normal again and can safely drive yourself home.
Are You a Candidate for Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation may be right for you if you:
- Avoid dental visits due to fear or anxiety
- Have highly sensitive teeth or a low pain threshold
- Need extensive or multiple procedures completed in one visit
- Have special healthcare needs that make dental treatment difficult
During your consultation, our team will review your medical history and help you determine the safest and most effective option for your needs.
